National Academic Honor Society with an emphasis on service to the school and community
Requirements: Applications are accepted and reviewed during a student’s second semester of 9th grade.  Those students who qualify for Beta Club are inducted the end of April or the beginning of May.
The student must meet the following qualifications:  90+ cumulative average, no semester average below a C, no ISS or OSS on permanent record, no Ns or Us in conduct.
Once inducted the student must continue to maintain the above stated qualifications and meet the service hours required by the club.
Meets:  A Clubs, Cafeteria, and as necessary after school
Dues:   One time fee of $30, part of which is sent to the national organization.
Meeting Agenda: Updates on service projects
Achievements: There is a local and national Beta Club Scholarship that is awarded to a student who has shown
great dedication to Beta Club through leadership, scholarship, and service.

Purpose: To communicate relevant information to students about Bolton and our surrounding community.  To promote goodwill and foster healthy self-esteem among the student body and staff of Bolton High School.
Requirements: This is a hand selected class.  The student must finish a Theatre Arts Credit and apply for an interview with Ms. Bradley.
Dues:   Fundraising is Required
Agenda: Produce BHS Live TV and The Project.  -- Daily Class planning, shooting and editing for video projects. Outside Sports Shooting and Advertisement Projects.  Produce Bolton’s Miss Wildcat Pageant.
Achievements: Scholarships awarded to seniors majoring in a communication field with recommendations from club sponsor for leadership, scholastic ability, contributions to BHS Live.

Campus Life

Purpose: Campus Life is a place for high school students to have fun, make friends. and talk about issues with other high school students. Campus Life provides a balanced approach - physical, mental, social and spiritual - to give teens the skills and hope they need to live in a turbulent world.

Purpose: To make a difference in families, careers, and communities by addressing important personal, work, and societal issues through family and consumer sciences education. FCCLA is a nonprofit national career and technical student organization for young men and women in family and consumer science education in public and private school through grade 12.
Activities: Attendance at the Leadership Conference, Memphis and cluster meeting in St. Louis. Visit nursing homes, collect teddy bears for St. Jude, make goody bags for football team, and decorated t-shirts in honor of veterans.
Achievements: Midsouth Fair Winners in Fashion Revue/Construction, Poster/Oratorical, and Bread categories.

Purpose: FCCLA is a nonprofit national vocational student organization for young men and women in family and consumer science education classes through grade 12. Achievements: The main project last year was to Sponsor the St. Jude Trike-A-Thon. Over $3,100 dollars was raised for patients at St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Purpose: To educate our members to work efficiently, not only in an office setting, but also in a wide variety of business situations. Students can take advantage of a wide variety of professional development, service, and leadership opportunities. Emphasis is placed on taking pride in our country and its free enterprise business system
Requirements: All students enrolled in Business Technology classes are required to join in order to complete the state competency related to leadership skills. Club fees are covered in the lab fee for these classes. Students who are not enrolled Business Technology classes may also join, but will have to remit the $15.00 club fee to Mrs. Hearn by September 28.
Meets:  2nd Thursday of each Month--Room S-110
Dues:   $15.00 per member
Meeting Agenda: Monthly class meeting will be use to inform students of upcoming events, plan for competitive events, etc. Occasionally the entire club will meet to hear guest speakers on relative topics.
Achievements: Opportunity to compete with other business students at the local, state and national levels. Senior members may earn scholarships based on service and academic achievement.

Knowledge Bowl Team

Dues: No Dues
Purpose: To compete in Quiz Bowl tournaments throughout the Mid-South, including News Channel 3 Knowledge Bowl.
Requirements: All interested students must take a general knowledge test to qualify for the team. Students who are strong in a particular subject or have a broad range of knowledge are generally good candidates.

Meeting Agenda: Most practices involve a scrimmage, or some practice version of a Knowledge Bowl competition. Often, students will conduct their own research and write questions to be used at a later practice.
Achievements: Students placed in the top tier of several tournaments last year. The team qualified for and attended the National Tournament in Chicago.

La Raza

This club is for Latinos attending Bolton.
Purpose: to share cultural issues and to help those who cannot speak English.
The name of the club was chosen because La Raza is a holiday on October 12th, (the day of
the race). It is a celebration of the meeting of the Indians with the Europeans and the Africans. This mixture of races and traditions is today the Latin American culture.

Latin Club

Purpose: Latin Club strives to broaden its students’ knowledge of the ancient Roman culture and language.
Dues:
The fee to be a member of Latin Club is $5, to cover the cost of our needs, including T-shirts.
Requirements: Requirements for the Latin Club are current enrollment in Latin 1, 2, or 3 or successful completion of at least 2 years of Latin.
Achievements: Every year Latin students participate in the National Latin Exam.  There has been no one to fail the test for the past 18 years.  The Latin Club sponsors a contestant in the Miss Wildcat Pageant, and donates money to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Junior National Art Honor Society (9th)

Dues:  $20 to help pay for pizza after school and/or a field trip to a museum and art supplies.
Programs:
 Students will have the opportunity to use better supplies and ones that are new and different, with none of the classroom rules and more time to complete art works.  Finished works will likely be entered in shows.


National Honor Society

Purpose: To instill the importance of community service in our members
Requirements: Students with 92.45 GPA's are invited to attend during the spring of their junior year.

Dues: $20.00 per member
Meeting Agenda: Each month we make the students aware of the service opportunities that are available through the club.
Achievements: Several $500 scholarships are awarded to seniors who have met the scholarship requirements. Some of which are: Toys for Tots, Coats for Kids, Ronald McDonald House, Make-A-Wish, and Hope House. the NHS also sponsors adopt-a-family for Bolton families and landscaping of the school. Bolton is the only school to sponsor two wishes for Make-A-Wish each year. We have granted 7 wishes in the past three and a half years. Last year the Bolton NHS, with the help of the entire student body, donated $28,922.31 to local charities and projects.
This organization is granting its 10th Make-A-Wish in the fall of 2007.

Paw Print (Newspaper)

, advisor, has one year of previous experience. Additionally, she sponsors Bolton's yearbook, the Wildcat. She also teaches honors British literature to twelfth grade students.

Purpose: The purpose of the newspaper is to teach journalism as as English elective. At a minimum, the paper is published in five issues. Students are encouraged to explore the current events of Bolton High, the Memphis area, Tennessee, and the world as a whole while learning journalistic techniques, interviewing techniques, and story writing. The staff meets as a class during sixth period.
Requirements: The students are hand-selected by Mrs. Young. In February of each year, students interested in being on staff for the following year fill out an application. These are made available outside Mrs. Young's room, E-135. Students' attendance, GPA, recommendations, attitude, and other school commitments are taken into consideration.

Purpose: The honorary International Thespian Society is an organization for those who have actively participated in theatre. These students have dedicated a significant amount of time in the advancement of performing as through either acting or technical achievements. Bolton Troupe 3968 has made tremendous efforts to simultaneously entertain and educates its student body and community. Through its commitment to excellence in secondary education, Troupe 3968 continues its "Class Act."
Requirements: In order to gain membership into Troupe 3968 students must earn 10 points and participate as a performer or technical crew member for main stage productions, one-acts, conferences, or outside theater work in local community theatres.
Membership will be awarded to all students who quality. No student may be elected into the society, or denied membership if he or she has earned ten points and fulfilled membership requirements.

composite score or on any subtest.

Wildcat (Yearbook)

Sponsor: Dianne Young, who has served in the capacity of a yearbook advisor for ten years both at Bolton High and Cordova High, has attended the National Advisors' Workshop in Dallas, Texas. Additionally she sponsors Bolton's newspaper, the Paw Print, and teaches honors British literature.

The Wildcat yearbook is an award winning publication of Bolton High. In the past two years, the prestigious award of FIRST PLACE has been earned through the American Scholastic Press Association judging contest. Additionally, the book has been chosen as Taylor Publishing's 2005-2006 Yearbook-Yearbook Semi-Finalist. The 2007 edition will be published in full color, a first in the history of Bolton High School.
Purpose: The purpose of the annual publication is to record the significant events of the school year while learning journalism techniques. The staff meets as classes during fifth and sixth periods. The fifth period class puts together all of the yearbook except the senior tributes, which the sixth period class puts together.
Requirements: The students are hand-selected by Mrs. Young. In February of each year, the students interested in being on staff for the following school year fill out an application. These are made available outside Mrs. Young's room, E-135. Students' attendance, GPA, recommendations, attitude, and other school commitments are taken into consideration.



Wordsmith/Creative Writing: The Power of the Pen

Purpose: WordSmith is an annual writing competition for the best writers in the Memphis area. Students from area middle and high schools gather in February for a competition to crown the best of the best in the discipline of writing. On competition day, students compete in three dashes or write-offs. The winners are then awarded with medals and every participant receives a ribbon.The purpose of WordSmith is to enhance and expand the writing abilities of young people. WordSmith asks a student to combine the power of persuasion with creativity. A WordSmith writer is one who is creative, unique, and able to invoke emotions and feelings into their writing. A participant in WordSmith should be able to write well, should have good to well-developed English skills, and, most importantly, should enjoy writing. The WordSmith team forms at the beginning of a school year. Interested students and those who are already members, meet to have a “write-off.” At the write-off students will be introduced to the specific types of writing WordSmith involves. For example, students will be given 10 minutes to write a paragraph describing an objective using only 40 words. Students will then be asked to return once a week for practice leading up to the competition in February. The Wordsmith team is composed of two final participants and two alternates, which is announced in late January. All other students are encouraged to participate for experience for the future. WordSmith is an excellent way to meet people, practice your craft of writing, and have fun!
Requirements: A completed application, a “B” average or above in your current English class, and two teacher recommendations. Also, the participant must attend at least 10 practices and the competition in February.
Meets: B Clubs – September through February; after school, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 2:20-3:20 once a month (twice a month in January and February).
Dues: $10.00 – includes entry fee for competition and materials

Achievements: Students select to compete at the February competition are eligible to place 1st – 3rd and honorable mention in three categories for each grade level. Additionally, students who place in two of the three categories are eligible to compete in the sweepstakes write-off.
